Healthy Choices for Your Pet
Feeding your pet a balanced diet is the foundation of a long and healthy life. At Bayview Animal Hospital, our team can help you develop, implement, and maintain a plan that keeps your pet both healthy and satisfied.
Getting the Right Food vs. the Best Food
When it comes to buying food for your pet, no product is the absolute “best.” However, you can select the right food for your pet based on his or her individual needs. Our recommendations are based on the guidelines of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). AAFCO-approved products contain the correct amount of protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals for proper growth and maintenance. Diets should also be chosen on the basis of your pet’s age. The nutritional needs of young animals are substantially different from those of adults. Likewise, foods that provide nutrition for adults are often inappropriate for younger animals. In general, we recommend Purina Pro Plan as it offers a variety of healthy options for your pet at all stages of his or her development.
We strongly encourage owners to become educated about how to read pet food labels. Terms such as “human grade” and “grain-free” can be misleading, and we want you to have accurate information when making decisions. When in doubt, don’t hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns. Remember, asking your veterinarian for advice is always safer than asking the first person you see at the pet store!
Obesity Prevention and Weight Loss
Similar to human-centered healthcare, obesity prevention and weight loss is a focal point in veterinary care. For cats and dogs, being even slightly overweight can put them at risk for developing serious medical conditions. Common weight-related disorders include:
- Diabetes (type 2)
- Heart and respiratory disease
- High blood pressure
- Various forms of cancer
At Bayview Animal Hospital, we can also use Purina’s diet management software to digitally track your pet’s nutrition and weight. For some, this may be a great option to get their pet back on a healthy track. Fortunately, preventing obesity and maintaining an ideal weight can be easier than you think, and the team at Bayview Animal Hospital is happy to help you explore healthier lifestyle choices for your pet.
